Something happened on the Lido this year that is worth naming, because it runs against every incentive a red carpet creates. Venezia 83 dressed down. Not carelessly — with enormous precision — but down: muted, pared back, and overwhelmingly black.

The tone was set at the top. Jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal wore black. So, across the eleven days, did a long list of the edition's most photographed names — Laura Dern, Vittoria Ceretti, Rooney Mara, Chase Sui Wonders, Amal Clooney among them. On a carpet where colour is the cheapest available form of attention, that many people choosing not to use it is not a coincidence. It is a read on the room.
And the room had a mood. This was a festival that opened with Ink, a film about the manufacture of public attention, and whose lifetime-achievement speech turned into a warning about authoritarianism. Dressing loudly into that would have been a misjudgement, and the Lido is a place where people rarely misjudge.
What Restraint Actually Requires
The paradox of a pared-back carpet is that it is far more demanding to execute. Remove colour and print and you are left with three things: cut, fabric and one accessory. Every one of them has to be perfect, because there is nothing to hide behind.
Nude and crystal: restraint that took a very long time to make. Venice Lido, 5 September 2026. Photo: @visual.twinsThe nude and champagne register worked the same way — from a distance it reads as almost nothing, and at close range it reveals thousands of hours of hand-set crystal. That is a deliberate joke on the medium: a dress designed to underperform in the wide shot and dominate the detail frame.
The Off-Duty Version
Restraint extended past the carpet. The daytime arrivals — the ones that happen by boat, in full sun, with no lighting and no time — leaned hard on the same formula. A black square-neck dress, a diamond necklace, dark glasses, a quilted bag. Nothing invented, nothing trying.

Photo: @visual.twinsThere is a reason those frames travel further than the evening ones: they read as real. The evening carpet is a production. A boat arrival at four in the afternoon is a person getting off a boat, and the styling either survives that or it does not.
The Exception That Proved It
Against all that discipline, the few people who used colour landed harder than they would have in any other edition. One ivory-and-white arrival outside the Excelsior, cut on the bias with a bare back and almost no ornament, did more with less than most of the beaded gowns of the week.

If Venezia 83 is a signal rather than a mood, the 2027 circuit will be quieter than the one we have just shot. For anyone dressing a client for it: the margin for error goes up, not down. Simple is not easier. It is only simpler to describe.
