For eleven days a narrow strip of Adriatic sand became the most photographed address in world cinema, and we were there with both lenses: one for stills, one for motion. Now that the risers are down and the carpet is rolled, it is time to look back at the edition that ended up defining the 2026 autumn season — frame by frame.

Venezia 83 ran from 2 to 12 September 2026 on the Lido, organised by La Biennale di Venezia under artistic director Alberto Barbera. It opened with Danny Boyle's Ink and closed with Giovanni Veronesi's God Laughs. A jury led by Maggie Gyllenhaal handed the Golden Lion to May el-Toukhy's Woman Unknown — the only film in competition directed solely by a woman — which also took the Coppa Volpi for Mathilde Arcel. John Malkovich took the men's Volpi for Wild Horse Nine. George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn received Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement.

The story of the edition's fashion was subtraction. From the jury bench outward, Venezia 83 went muted: black, ivory, nude, champagne, and colour used so sparingly that every exception landed twice as hard. The dominant silhouette was the column — narrow through the body, weight low, movement in the last metre of fabric.

For the first time in several editions, the menswear was the more interesting carpet. The white dinner jacket returned — open, slightly oversized, worn with a full black trouser and a chain instead of a bow tie — and the Armani register, set on opening night by Clooney in its most classical form, was pushed by a younger generation who let the cloth breathe.

Venice remains the only festival on earth whose front door is a boat. The arrivals — unposed, unlit, one pass only — produced the material that travelled furthest, alongside the private sessions shot in the gaps between call times.

VT Media, our AI-powered delivery platform, ran throughout the eleven days. Guests found their own red carpet moment with a selfie, hours after each event, already graded and retouched — the standard we brought to Cannes 2026 and docked on the Lido in September.

The Lido empties in about the time it takes for the last taxis to clear the Excelsior pontoon. From here the season moves to Milan and Paris for the spring-summer shows — same method, different city, two lenses.
